LOCH AWE SAFETY COMPANY

Press Release in response to publication of the Loch Awe Fatal Accident Inquiry Report

The Loch Awe Safety Company (LASC) acknowledges that, despite the tragic circumstances leading to the inquiry, and the ongoing distress to the families of the deceased, the inquiry report contains valuable findings and recommendations which will guide the future safe use of Loch Awe for all who use it.

We are pleased that the Sheriff, in his report, has acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the Loch Awe Safety Company, and its associated LochWatch Loch Awe scheme, to enhance and improve the safe use of the loch.

The LASC has made significant and measurable improvements in:

• Loch Safety awareness (posters, demonstrations),
• Safer use of the loch (placing of buoys to mark submerged hazards),
• Being able to quickly locate loch users in distress (LochWatch scheme).
• With the invaluable support of Gael Force Marine, enabling the sale of life jackets at heavily discounted prices, encouraging the wearing of life jackets thus increasing the response time available for rescue.

Looking forward, there are two main issues to be addressed by the directors of LASC.

1 Investing the monies raised by the families of the deceased anglers, in a manner which will have a significant positive effect on loch safety, and, align with the original aspirations of the families.

2 Improving in the effectiveness of rescue from the loch, including researching and selecting the best equipment and resources for that purpose.

LASC will take a leading role in discussions with the emergency services; the community safety forums; Argyll and Bute Council and volunteer rescue teams with the objective of an agreed, shared position on improving loch rescue response and effectiveness.
