LOCHWATCH LOCH AWE OPEN DAY AT LOCH AWE BOATS ARDBRECKNISH

LochWatch volunteers gathered at Loch Awe Boats on Sunday 28th March 2010 to spend an afternoon working with the emergency services. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Oban, Appin and Ardpatrick attended along with Oban Mountain Rescue and Strathclyde Police. Twenty volunteers along with families and friends spent time with Coastguards who explained and demonstrated how to take a compass bearing; how to orientate an Ordnance Survey map and then translate a bearing onto a map.

The Coastguard teams also demonstrated the use of throwing lines as a rescue tool and invited LochWatch volunteers to have a go.

Some boats that use Loch Awe carry orange smoke and would use it in an emergency to summon assistance. The Coastguard demonstrated the use of the orange smoke and fired off two canisters to let the LochWatch volunteers see what it would look like on the loch.

As well as training and instruction the LochWatch volunteers had plenty of time to meet each other; meet the emergency services and enjoy delicious home baking!

During the afternoon a further six volunteers signed up bringing the total to 48 giving good coverage around the loch.

LochWatch volunteer Robert Connor who lives in Dalavich and works on a fish farm at the Pass of Brander said of the Open Day “Just want to thank you for a great day out, I learnt a great deal and feel a lot more comfortable about dealing with a situation now because of today, also thank you for the lovely cakes they were too nice LOL!”

A training event specifically for LochWatch boat volunteers is planned for after the Easter holidays
